Acoustic Engineer II

MSI Transducers | Location:  543 Great Rd. Littleton MA | Send resume to:  MSIHR@airmar.com

JOB SUMMARY:

Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment where you can take ownership of development efforts from concept through realization? Are you energized by solving a variety of problems that draw on the broad range of technical and interpersonal skills you have developed throughout your career? Are you a versatile engineer who excels on cross-functional teams rather than fitting into a narrowly defined role? If so, you may be a great fit for MSI Transducers.

MSI Transducers is a small, collaborative team that manufactures low-volume, highly complex electromechanical sonar assemblies for defense and commercial applications. This mid-level position receives direction on new assignments but is expected to work independently to plan and execute assigned responsibilities.

The Transducer Engineer works closely with the Chief Engineer and Production Manager to develop and manufacture complex mechanical and acoustic designs. The engineer may also provide technical direction and guidance to technicians and other technical staff in completing technical drawings, developing new assembly processes, and fabricating production and prototype transducers.

This position may be assigned project management responsibilities and may lead design reviews both internally and with customers. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, a commitment to high-quality work, the ability to operate independently, and effective collaboration with departments across the company.

The ideal candidate will have experience in acoustics and sonar systems.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Transducer Design
  • Design and optimize elector-acoustic transducers including selecting appropriate materials, evaluating acoustical and electrical outputs, specifying mechanical configurations, and incorporating environmental protection for underwater use.
  • Utilize specialized software and modeling tools to simulate the performance of ultrasonic transducers, ensuring their efficiency, accuracy, and reliability.
  • Maintain thorough and organized documentation of designs, simulations, test results, and project progress.
  • Plan and conduct experiments and tests to validate processes against specification requirements. Analyze and interpret test results to refine designs as needed.
  • Prepare organized summaries of analysis completed to document the design methodology and satisfaction of requirements.
Documentation
  • Support detailed design and analysis culminating in an engineering drawing package and related parts lists and BOMs.
  • Prepare detailed drawings and 3D solid model for components, assemblies, and subassemblies.
Program Management
  • Establish milestones and monitor adherence to master plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Prepare and present and review design packages at both internal and customer attended reviews.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors to determine part suitability, availability of materials and parts, and delivery schedules.
  • Conduct periodic program status meetings with key contributors to report progress toward program objectives, communicate updates, and resolve performance issues.
Collaboration
  • Support the manufacturing team in assembling prototype and advanced-development hardware, and assist production technicians in resolving fabrication issues throughout the design and production processes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and scientists to integrate transducer hardware into larger systems.
  • Coordinate with business development to prepare new proposals including initial program planning, statements of work, technical specifications, and product or service cost estimates
  • Direct program activities across functional areas, including procurement, manufacturing, quality, configuration management, logistics, administration, contract administration, and facilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in acoustics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
  • Three to five years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Exceptional decision-making, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams while balancing competing priorities.
  • Program management experience, including driving tasks to completion and managing schedules and budgets.
  • Experience with numerical analysis tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, or Python.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and /or working with underwater transducers, sonar systems, or subsea systems.
  • Familiarity with commercially available finite element software such as PZ Flex, ANSYS, COMSOL , or Atila.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project or equivalent program management software.
  • Familiarity with 3D solid modeling software such as Solidworks or CREO.
  • Experience creating technical documentation for a production environment.

The candidate must be a US citizen and eligible to obtain a security clearance.
